Fernandes statement a lie, says Pak.

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD APRIL 13. Islamabad today dubbed the reported statement by the Defence Minister, George Fernandes, that Pakistan was a prime case for pre-emptive strikes as a `lie', and asserted that it was geared up to meet any eventuality.

``It is a lie that has no legs to stand on. The whole world knows George Fernandes as an irresponsible leader who lost all credibility because of his wild and unfounded allegations against each one of India's neighbours,'' a Pakistan Foreign Office spokesman said.

Pakistan had caught ``several Indian agents, some red-handed, who masterminded many terrorist activities in Pakistan. India's support to terrorist movements in the region is also well documented,'' he said.

The spokesman claimed that the world community has lauded Pakistan's role in the war against terrorism, which ``continues to irk people like George Fernandes''. ``Instead of fretting over Pakistan, the Indian leaders should shed their hegemonistic mindset and focus on settling disputes with Pakistan peacefully through negotiations,'' he said.

Mr. Fernandes has been quoted as saying in Kolkata that ``there are enough reasons to launch pre-emptive strikes against Pakistan, but I cannot make public statements on whatever action may be taken.'' He said he endorsed the External Affairs Minister, Yashwant Sinha's comments that India had a much better case to go for pre-emptive action against Pakistan than the U.S. had in Iraq.
