BJP dividing society, says Sonia

By Lalit Shastri

MANDLA (MADHYA PRADESH) APRIL 12. The Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, today lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party accusing it of trying to divide society on communal lines.

Taking a dig at the BJP, Ms. Gandhi said that it viewed politics only as a means to acquiring power.

Since those in the BJP remembered their God only at the time of elections, one could imagine their attitude towards the common man.

``Before the polls they had promised to make the earth a heaven but nothing has happened, problems are not solved, inflation has broken the backbone of the people and women only know how they are managing the affairs of their homes,'' she said.

Ms. Gandhi alleged that the seat of power was their only destination and there was corruption galore under the BJP rule.

Ms. Gandhi complimented the Congress Government in Madhya Pradesh, particularly the Chief Minister, Digvijay Singh, and his colleagues for taking the ``revolutionary'' decision to distribute the net profit from the sale of timber and bamboo to the tribals through the forest committees set up under the Joint Forest Management programme. This initiative should show the way to the other States.

Distributing dividends to a cross-section of those representing the office-bearers of forest committees, Ms. Gandhi said the tribals depended on forests for their livelihood but, at the same time, all efforts should be made to protect nature.

Digvijay Singh, in his address, said the Forest Protection Act was posing certain problems.

The proposal to bring about some amendments to this Act would be sent to Ms. Gandhi, he said adding that it would require a lot of thinking.

The State Forest Minister, Harbans Singh, said the State Forest Department was generating a revenue of over Rs. 400 crores through the sale of teak and bamboo.

After deducting the overheads, the State Government was having at its disposal over Rs. 100 crores for distribution to the forest-dwellers.
