41 injured in Kashmir blasts

SRINAGAR APRIL 12. At least one civilian was killed and 41 injured when militants lobbed grenades at three places in south Kashmir today.

Police sources said militants hurled a grenade at a security force patrol in Qazigund town. It, however, missed the target and exploded on the road injuring 21 civilians. One of the seriously injured, a doctor, later died in hospital. Two Army personnel were also injured in the blast.

Earlier in the day, six civilians were injured when militants lobbed a grenade towards a police party it Kulgam town of south Kashmir. The third consecutive strike of the day came at the district headquarters of Anantnag in south Kashmir where militants tossed a hand grenade on a paramilitary forces picket. It missed the target and exploded on the road injured 15 civilians, including a child.

A top-ranking commander of the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen was killed in an encounter with security forces in Keller area of Pulwama district late on Friday night.

Police sources identified him as Qamar-uz-Zaman and claimed that he was the deputy district commander of the outfit. However, officials in Pulwama district claimed that he was a divisional commander of the outfit.

According to police sources, a joint patrolling party of the BSF and the State police had laid in wait near the Yarwan forest of Pulwama district last night following a tip-off that a top militant was moving through the area. On spotting a group of militants, the security personnel challenged them and an exchange of fire followed in which Qamar was killed and the rest escaped, the sources said.

Describing the killing as a major success, they said Qamar had been active in the area since 1990. An AK assault rifle, three magazines, a pistol with a magazine, a wireless set and two hand grenades were recovered from the slain militant.
