CM statement on police station visit callous: Vaiko

By Our Staff Reporter

Nagapattinam April 11. The MDMK leader, Vaiko, today condemned the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa's ``callous'' remarks about the visit made by the DMK president, M. Karunanidhi to the North Beach police station in Chennai, where detained opposition MLAs had been kept yesterday.

Mr. Karunanidhi had led and participated in very many agitations and demonstrations from a very early age. "Though I left him in the past following differences of opinion, I never demeaned his spirit for agitations in the cause of upholding democracy", Mr. Vaiko told reporters here.

It was ``unbecoming of the Chief Minister to make such remarks that too after evicting all Opposition members from the Assembly''.

(Yesterday, the Chief Minister told the House that she asked the police to allow Mr. Karunanidhi to visit the detained MLAs and ``safely'' leave him in his house, in case he resorted to a dharna outside the station. However, the former Chief Minister resorted to no such ``adventure'' and he returned to Anna Arivalayam after ``posing with the arrested MLAs for photographs, she said.)

Mr. Vaiko said Ms. Jayalalithaa would have taken part only in ``agitations and rallys'' recorded at studios.

Asked about the filing of a controversial affidavit by the Union Government against him in a POTA (Prevention of Terrorism Act) case in the Supreme Court, Mr. Vaiko said he had initially made up his mind not to make any request for reconsideration of the affidavit. "But, I changed by stance only to respect the steps taken by the DMK leader to see that a modified affidavit was filed by the Union Government".
