CPI not to seek Cong. help to oppose BJP

By Our Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA APRIL 10. The CPI national secretary, D. Raja, has said that his party would not join hands with the Congress to oppose the BJP.

At a meet-the-press programme here today, Mr. Raja said the Congress had not shown the willpower to oppose the extreme Hindutva line of the BJP. Mr. Raja pointed out that the Congress was following a soft Hindutva policy. This was evident in the party's campaign in the Gujarat election, he said.

Mr. Raja noted that the relevance of the third front had not been lost. The mass base of the front could be strengthened through public contact programmes and various campaigns, he said. On the revolt in the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee over the selection of candidates to the Rajya Sabha election, Mr. Raja said it was an internal problem of the Congress.

Mr. Raja noted that the Kerala was virtually under police-raj at present. ``The Muthanga incident is a shame to the whole nation, '' he said.

Deploring the failure of the NDA Government at the centre to effectively oppose the U.S. attack on Iraq, Mr. Raja said the Vajpayee Government was following a pro-U.S. policy. He said the U.S. would turn its attention to Kashmir after the fall of the Saddam regime.

He asked the Prime Minister to take the lead in pressurising the UN to establish peace in Iraq.

Criticising the disinvestment of public sector enterprises, Mr. Raja said privatisation would increase unemployment in the country. If the Government continued its anti-labour polices, communalism would strengthen in the country, he said.

A public reception was accorded to the CPI's national march led by Mr. Raja at various places in the district today.
