CPI(M) may help Karunakaran

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI APRIL 10. The CPI(M) State secretary, Pinarayi Vijayan, says his party would be `naturally delighted' if the rebel Congress candidate got elected to the Rajya Sabha, but was non-committal on the possibility of the LDF backing the Karunakaran group if it chose to pull the Antony Government down.

``We will be naturally delighted if the Congress Party's official candidate is defeated by the rebel,'' Mr. Vijayan told mediapersons here on Thursday. He did not conceal the fact that the CPI(M)'s sympathies were with Mr. Karunakaran and his group. But Mr. Vijayan refused to say whether the LDF would use the extra votes available with its MLAs to get the rebel Congress candidate Kodoth Govindan Nair elected.

Mr. Vijayan said this would be decided depending on the way the events turned out to be. However, the issue would certainly be discussed at the LDF meeting set for April 13.

He was non-committal when asked if the LDF would support the Karunakaran group in case it wanted to topple the Antony Government by moving a no-confidence motion in the Assembly. His party was not interested in grabbing power by any means, he claimed. He commented that the root cause of the Congress's current problems was a lack of internal democracy. The party did not have a democratically elected leadership, he said. But, when reporters pointed out that the CPI(M) rebels like V.B. Cherian had the same complaint of lack of internal democracy against the CPI(M), Mr. Vijayan chose not to react to it.
