City development: stress on private participation

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM April 9. The Local Self-Government Minister, Cherkalam Abdulla, today stressed the need for private sector participation in city development projects.

Speaking after inaugurating the Punnen Road Development Scheme taken up by the Trivandrum Development Authority, he said the investment climate ushered in by the UDF Government had cleared the way for private agencies to invest in development schemes.

Mr. Abdulla highlighted the need for different agencies to work in tandem for the development of the capital city.

The Minister said the Clean Kerala Programme launched by the Government would have to be supplemented by the active involvement of local bodies and the general public.

The Minister said the Government would impose a spot fine system to deter litterbugs. He said biodegradable garbage bags would soon be made mandatory for public and private vehicles plying on the roads of the State.

Mr. Abdulla said steps would be taken to expedite the Canal Walk project and the Palayam Urban Renewal Scheme.

The Thiruvananthapuram East MLA, B. Vijayakumar, presided over the function.

The TRIDA chairman, P.K. Venugopal, and the member secretary, V.V. Krishnarajan, the Additional Chief Secretary, Babu Jacob, the former MP, Thalekunnil Basheer, and the Kozhikode Development Authority chairman, Mayin Haji, were present.
