QMC demolition

Sir, — Endorsing your Editorial on "Pulling down the past" ( April 7 ). everybody would suggest that the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister should give up the proposal to pull down the historical structure which is after all not so dilapidated as to deserve destruction at present. By sparing the QMC building she would not lose anything and instead she would be appreciated for accommodating the feelings of almost all sections of the people of Tamil Nadu. Her conviction that a building could be raised for the college with all ultra modern facilities does not hold water with the present financial condition of the State. Displeasure among all is simply avoidable now.

K.Ganapathi,

Sir, — This is with reference to your forthright Editorial condemning the move to demolish the Queen Mary's College. When there are so many important problems such as drought and unemployment crying for immediate attention and action, when the State is facing acute financial crisis, where is the need and urgency to spend a lot of money on the Thuglagian experiment of having a temporary Secretariat complex constructed on the world-famous Marina beach mindlessly pulling down historically important structures like the Queen Mary's College, brushing aside genuine fears and doubts of the students, staff, alumni and members of the public. Instead of standing on false prestige and going ahead with this unnecessary and much-opposed move, the Chief Minister should respect the feelings of the people and abandon the project.

D. Samuel Lawrence,
Ditzingen, Germany
