Arabs call for U.N. meet

By Sridhar Krishnaswami

Washington APRIL 8. The 22-member Arab Group at the United Nations decided late on Monday to call for a General Assembly session that will seek a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Iraq.

A formal letter to this effect will be sent to the Assembly President. According to Yemen's Ambassador to the United Nations, the Arab Group is seeking a "very mild '' resolution that will ask for a "ceasefire, respect for Iraqi sovereignty, territorial integrity. It will ask for the unity of Iraq''. But not many in New York are sure when this Assembly will be convened and when the resolution will be passed. In fact, many question if the Assembly is going to be called into session and a vote taken at all.
