CISF takes over airports' security

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI APRIL 2. The entire security network of the domestic and international terminals of the Indira Gandhi International Airport here was today formally handed over to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) replacing the Delhi police which was till now in charge of the airport's security.

Speaking at the induction ceremony, the Civil Aviation Minister, Shahnawaz Hussain, informed that the "hyper-sensitive'' IGI Airport was the 46th airport in the country to be handed over to the CISF as part of the Government's efforts to have a single, specialised and dedicated force for aviation security.

Asking the CISF personnel to be cautious as well as courteous in their approach, Mr. Hussain said security should not be compromised at any cost be it a common man or any top bureaucrat or politician. The Minister said a list of VVIPs had been prepared who were exempted from personal frisking, the security men should abide by it and the rest should be searched.

Informing that a series of new measures and modern equipment would also be introduced at the IGI Airport to counter any terrorist threat, the Minister said the cost of deploying CISF for aviation security at major airports across the country would rise from Rs.80 crores to Rs.218 crores.

Complimenting Delhi police for providing excellent security cover to the IGI Airport which handles 13,100 domestic and 9,500 international passengers daily, Mr. Hussain said a "Civil Aviation Security Academy'' would also be coming up in the Capital to provide specialised training to security personnel.

The CISF personnel have been imparted with specialised training concerning anti-hijacking and physical security of the airport and aircraft while quick reaction teams have also been put in place to handle emergencies. Besides various other measures like CCTV surveillance, x-ray screening of baggages, induction of state-of-the-art security gadgets like doorframe and hand-held metal detectors have been provided for foolproof security.
