Unido to open centre in the State

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM April 2. The United Nations Development Organisation (Unido) would open its regional centre in Kerala, the Electricity Minister, Kadavoor Sivadasan, said here today.

Addressing a press conference, Mr Sivadasan said that the regional centre, which would cater to the requirements of South Asian countries, would be inaugurated by the Chief Minister, A.K. Antony, on Friday at a function at the Kanakakunnu Palace here in the presence of the Unido Director General, Carlos Magarinos, and the Indian Ambassador to Austria, P.P. Srinivasan.

Mr. Sivadasan said the Unido's international centre was located in China. It was located in China because it had the largest number of small hydel projects. The regional centre was being established in Kerala as the first steps towards establishing a network of small hydel projects. He said that during his recent visit to China he had assured the Unido authorities that the State Government would extend all cooperation for setting up the regional centre.

During discussions with Unido authorities in August last, Kerala had emerged as the most suitable place for setting up a regional centre. The centre would undertake feasibility studies for small hydel projects, besides conducting energy audit and studies to reduce wasteful consumption of electricity. It would provide assistance to industrial units to renovate their equipment, he added.
