Rangasamy announces medical aid to former legislator

By Our Staff Reporter

Pondicherry April 2. The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, today announced in the Assembly that Rs. 3 lakhs would be sanctioned to the former legislator, Deivanayagam, to enable him to undergo surgery for fixing artificial legs. Both the legs were amputated recently.

Mr. Rangasamy was responding to a plea made by the ruling Congress and DMK members for sanction of the amount, during the zero hour.

S.P. Sivakumar (DMK) thanked the Chief Minister for his gesture.

The AIADMK member, A. Anbalagan, brought to the notice of the House the threat posed by speeding fish-carts to road-users. Stating that a woman was killed in a mishap involving a fish-cart, the member wanted a ban on the plying of the vehicle.

Mr. Rangasamy said the traffic standing committee would take a decision on the issue.

R. Kamalakannan (Congress) wanted a drive taken up to end mosquito menace in Karaikal.

Lack of quorum

The proceedings in the House were affected during the discussion on budget for want of quorum.

The Speaker, M.D.R. Ramachandran, said if there was no minimum strength of members, he would have no other alternative except to adjourn the proceedings.

When the Treasury Bench said the absence of Opposition members was indicative of their lack of response, the Speaker retorted: ``Instead of blaming the Opposition, it would be of help if the ruling MLAs remained in the House and ensured the quorum.''
