According to sources, the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, called up Prof. Kokate on Wednesday morning before leaving for Mauritius. The Chief Minister has urged the Vice Chancellor to withdraw his resignation and extended his full support for the work being done by the latter. Meanwhile, the Governor has asked the Vice Chancellor to meet him in person on Thursday. The Vice Chancellor is understood to have been hurt over the remarks made by political leaders, particularly Major Irrigation Minister Kadiam Srihari. Senior academics in the university said the Minister had been interfering with the administration since long. He was reportedly pressurising the Vice Chancellor to appoint his candidates in the university as daily wage employees. However, following the Chief Minister's order, the university stopped recruitment. The Minister also reportedly rebuked Prof. Kokate for not inviting him for the recently held national inter-university youth festival and made derogatory remarks against him. Pained by the frequent criticism and pressure from the political leaders, Prof. Kokate has decided to step down from the post.
