State puts off VAT

By Our Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR APRIL 2. The Orissa Government today decided to defer implementation of the proposed valued added tax (VAT), following stiff resistance from the business community as well as some Ministers.

The State Cabinet, which met under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik, ordered formation of a three-member Cabinet Sub-Committee to give a re-look to the Bill pertaining to the new tax. It will submit a report within 15 days.

The State Government had earlier decided to switch over to the new tax system with effect from April 1.
