`Resolve crisis through U.N.'

MOSCOW APRIL 2 . India and Russia have called for an early settlement of the Iraqi crisis on the basis of the U.N. Security Council resolutions. The war dominated a meeting of the Indian Ambassador to Moscow, Krishnan Raghunath, with the Deputy Russian Foreign Minister, Yuri Fyodorov, here on Wednesday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. ``The (two) sides spoke in favour of strengthening the role of the United Nations as the only universal mechanism for maintaining international peace and stability, stressed the importance of preventing a humanitarian tragedy in Iraq as a result of the unleashed military action and called for the earliest settlement of the Iraqi problem on the basis of the U.N. Security Council resolutions.''

The meeting reflected increased intensity of Indo-Russian consultations on Iraq. In the past 10 days the Russian Foreign Minister, Igor Ivanov, and the External Affairs Minister, Yashwant Sinha, discussed the problem in a telephone conversation, the Foreign Secretary, Kanwal Sibal, visited Moscow and the Indian Ambassador twice met senior Russian diplomats in the Russian Foreign Ministry.
