Fresh repression alleged

By Our Staff Reporter

JAMMU APRIL 2. Trade unions have charged the authorities with using strong-arm tactics again on thousands of Baghliar Hydel Project workers who are protesting large-scale retrenchment of their colleagues. Activists have been camping at Chanderkote, the project site in Doda district expressing solidarity with those retrenched. The workers went on strike on March 5 when 1,475 people were retrenched by J.P. Industries which is responsible for constructing the dam on Chenab river.

The activists alleged that the workers were sacked in gross violation of their terms of contract. The next day, the general secretary of the employees union, Abdul Zargar, was "illegally" arrested and a remand was obtained only after 15 days. Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir High Court has ordered the release of the arrested trade union leader on bail.
