Three other accused in the case, the former Chief Secretary, Padmakumar, the former Additional Chief Secretary, Zachariah Mathew, and the former Secretary (Civil Supplies), P. J. Thomas, presented themselves before the court today and were granted bail. The Judge had issued summons to all the eight accused on March 12 to appear before him on April 2 for the trial. Today's order was issued when five of the accused failed to appear despite the summons. The former managing director of the Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation (KSCSC), Jiji Thomson, the Singapore-based Power and Energy Corporation director, V. Sadasivan and his son, Sivaramakrishnan, were the other accused who failed to appear. Mr. Karunakaran's counsel submitted that the senior Congress Leader was ill and should be excused for not appearing in the court. Counsel for Mr. Mustapha submitted that the accused was in New Delhi while Jiji Thomson's counsel said Mr. Thomson was attending the funeral ceremony of a close relative. The prosecution case is that the accused defrauded the public exchequer of Rs. 2.32 crores through the import of palmolein at exorbitant rates from Malayasia during the 1991-92 period.
