Vigilance probe against persons implicated

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM APRIL. 2. The Kerala Cabinet has decided to institute a vigilance probe against politicians and officials implicated by the Mohankumar Commission that inquired into the Kalluvathukal liquor tragedy.

The Chief Minister, A. K. Antony, who briefed presspersons here today on the Cabinet decisions, declined to say who all would be covered by the Vigilance investigation. The Home Department and the Excise Department would examine the involvement of officers, and action, if any, would be taken against them.

Mr. Antony said the Vigilance Department would also investigate the involvement of such other persons whose names figured in the report of the Commission as persons who had allegedly indulged in illegal activities.

The administrative departments concerned (police and excise), he said, would consider recommendations of the Commission on administrative, legal and policy-related issues. The Cabinet had not approved the recommendations as such and the decision was not to frame any one.He said the report would be tabled in the next session of the Assembly with the action-taken report.

He said the choice of the Congress candidates for the Rajya Sabha was that of the party high command. It was not made in consideration of groups in the party. All accepted the decision as final. The candidates were not the nominees of either him or the KPCC(I) president, K. Muraleedharan.

He urged the Opposition to reconsider and withdraw its plan for a land grab agitation by the tribals. It should not challenge the rule of law. Agitations aimed at creating martyrs was outdated, he added.

The Government, he said, would examine the complaints about the harassment of media persons by the police, cited by the Opposition Leader, V. S. Achuthanandan, in his letter to him.
