MUMBAI, APRIL 2. For the first time in its history, Tata Steel has crossed the target of four million tonnes of crude steel in 2002-03, producing a record 4.1 million tonnes against the previous best of 3.75 million tonnes in 2001-02; an increase of 9.4 per cent. The company achieved a record production of hot metal of 4.44 million tonnes against a previous best production 4.04 million tonnes in 2001-02; an increase of 9.9 per cent. In some areas of production, such as hot metal, crude steel, saleable steel, coal at West Boar Collieries, the steel company crossed 13 months production of the previous annual record in the 12 months of this financial year. Its divisions/department, namely LD2, hot strip mill, cold rolling mill, merchant mill also witnessed 13 months production of the previous annual record during 2002-03. The production of semis during the year came down by one percentage point to 14 per cent. Salable steel despatches during the year were 3.91 million tonnes, an increase of 2.87 lakh tonnes from the previous year. The percentage of flat products increased from 66 per cent in the previous fiscal to 68 per cent this year. The cold rolling mill crossed the last year's performance by an increase in production of 3.75 lakh tonnes to reach 1.1 million tonnes. Similarly, the hot strip mill produced 2.71 million tonnes, an increase of 2.79 lakh tonnes. In the long products area, CC billet caster, the wire rod mill and the merchant mill also surpassed their targets and their previous best annual figures. The overall sales of the company was 3.793 million tonnes against 3.605 million tonnes in 2001-02; an increase of 8 per cent.
