Five years as PM

Sir, __ Atal Behari Vajpayee has completed five years as Prime Minister despite several hassles. Under his leadership the country has been enjoying full freedom. But still, a section of the press, especially a section of the English press and the electronic media, keep on attacking the Vajpayee Government. If today the press and the private TV channels are enjoying full freedom, they have to publicly thank Mr. Vajpayee and especially Mr. L.K. Advani, then Minister of Information and Broadcasting, in the Morarji Desai Cabinet, who in 1977 restored press freedom and repealed the Prevention of Publication of Objectionable Matters Act of 1976 and the 40th Constitution Amendment of the Emergency era of Indira Gandhi.

It is most unfortunate that a section of the press and the private TV channels are becoming tools, knowingly or unknowingly, to encourage the enemies of freedom, the enemies of democracy, the enemies of unity and the perpetrators of `cross-border' terrorism.

Sir, — This has reference to the report ` Vajpayee will be our leader: Advani ' (March 30). If the mere completion of five years in office is some achievement to gloat about, then the CPI(M)-led Government in West Bengal and the RJD Government in Bihar should take credit for successfully completing more years in power much to the chagrin of Mamata Banerjee and George Fernandes. So can the Congress Governments in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

The Prime Minister has dared the Congress to ally itself with another party as it had done in Maharashtra. It is not clear what the Prime Minister was trying to prove. Can he team up with the United Front in Keral a, the Left Front in West Bengal, the AIADMK in Tamil Nadu, and the RJD in Bihar? His reasoning defies logic.
