CBI nabs one more in DDA scam

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI APRIL 1. Ajay Khanna, the representative of the DLF Universal Limited, became the second person to be arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in relation to the raids on top DDA officials which began on March 27. Anand Mohan Sharan, Commissioner (Land and Disposal), had already been arrested in the case.

According to a CBI spokesperson, Ajay Khanna was arrested this evening and would be produced in the court on Wednesday.

Earlier, Anand Mohan Sharan was remanded to CBI custody for six days after he was arrested on March 28.

The CBI is investigating two cases registered on March 26. One of them pertained to the alleged pay off by DLF Universal Limited to the top DDA officials, including the then DDA Vice- Chairman, Subhash Sharma, in lieu of allowing an increase in Floor Area Ratio (FAR) at a rate much lower than the existing market rates. Mr. Sharma was subsequently transferred from his post.

The investigating agency is also questioning Dharam Bir Khattar, who is allegedly the conduit for the top officials and facilitated interaction between them and those wanting undue favours after paying a price. In fact, in what was being seen as a related development, a Delhi High Court judge submitted his resignation on Monday. It was believed that recovery of documents from the possession of Dharam Bir related to the Judge resulted in his resignation.

Even as Dharam Bir's involvement was found in both the cases -- the other pertaining to a pay off for cancellation of land allotted to Modern School at Shalimar Bagh in North-West Delhi -- the CBI has so far not arrested him. However, he is apparently being constantly questioned.

More arrests are likely as the investigation moves ahead.
