Alagiri meets POTA detenus in Salem

By Our Special Correspondent

SALEM April 1. M.K. Alagiri, son of the DMK chief, M. Karunanidhi, today met three leaders, who have been detained in the Salem Central Prison under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

Mr. Alagiri told presspersons that he had met Bhoominathan and Ilavarasan, Madurai city and rural district secretaries of the MDMK respectively, and Thayappan of the Tamilar Desiya Iyakkam, in the prison. Mr Alagiri said they all thanked Mr. Karunanidhi for having taken up their cause at the appropriate level.

Asked whether he had come as a representative of Mr. Karunanidhi, Mr Alagiri said "it could be said so." Referring to the DMK stand on the POTA issue, Mr. Alagiri said that at the time of passing the legislation, the party supported it on the understanding that it would not and should not be misused.

To a question whether, of late, there was any shift in the DMK perception of the Act, he said Mr. Karunanidhi had already made his point clear.

On the functioning of the Madurai unit of the party, he said ``everything was all right.'' Pon. Muthuramalingam, former Minister, K.P. Ramalingam, State DMK farmers' wing secretary, Sivaraman and Thangam Thennarasu, former MLAs, and Chakkarapani, MLA and others were with Mr. Alagiri.
