Author of 15 novels and numerous short stories, Samuthiram's first story was published in 1974. Eight years later, he received the State Government's literary award and in 1990, the Sahitya Akademi award for his "Veeril Pazhutha Pala" (Jackfruit at the root) and later the Aditanar Award. A graduate in economics from the Theagaraya College here, Samuthiram worked in various capacities in the All-India Radio and Doordarshan. He retired as Joint Director of the Field Publicity wing of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry in March 1998. The DMK president, M. Karunanidhi, and the Congress leaders, E.V.K.S. Elangovan, S. Balakrishnan and G.K. Vasan, condoled with the death and recalled the writer's contribution to the literary field. R. Nallakannu, State CPI secretary, N. Varadarajan, CPI (M) leader, and K. Krishnasamy, president Puthiya Tamizhagam, were among those who mourned the literary figure. As the writer was also a member of the Sahitya Akademi general council, a meeting was held in the Chennai office to pay homage to Samuthiram.
