Nine killed as lorries collide

By Our Staff Reporter

NALGONDA APRIL 1. In a road accident involving two lorries, nine persons, including six members of a family, were killed on the spot at Gundrampally of Chityal mandal on Tuesday. Eight of them were burnt to death.

According to police sources, the family of Merugu Laxmaiah, who migrated to Hyderabad in search of work from Jayyaram of Marripeda mandal in Warangal district, boarded a Nandigama-bound lorry at L.B.Nagar. His family members -- M.Vinodam (30), Navya (6), Chinta Sobha Rani (20), Jampanna (2), Bhagya Laxmi (16) and Suresh (8) -- got into the lorry's cabin. Finding no space inside, Laxmaiah sat on top of the lorry. Another passenger was also there inside the cabin.

The lorry was hit by another lorry, which was on the way to Hyderabad, between Gundrampally and Reddibabigudem. The oil tanker of the ill-fated lorry broke open and it engulfed in flames. All eight persons, including the driver, who were in the cabin, were burnt to death instantaneously. Laxmaiah was the only survivor in the accident.

At the same time, the Hyderabad-bound lorry overturned, resulting in the killing of a passenger inside. Later, she was identified as Kattela Ramulamma (44) of Chinna Kaparthi in Chityal mandal.

Meanwhile, the flames of the ill-fated lorry reached a luxury bus of Miryalaguda, which was coming behind the Hyderabad-bound lorry. The bus caught fire. Luckily, 32 passengers of the bus had a providential escape. The driver stopped the bus and asked the commuters to get down immediately.
