S.V.Narayanaswamy Rao Award for Keshava Murthy

BANGALORE April 1. R.R.Keshava Murthy, eminent violinist, has been selected for the prestigious Sri S.V. Narayanaswamy Rao National Award this year.

The Sri Ramaseva Mandali Trust, Chamarajpet, instituted the award in memory of late S.V.Narayanaswamy Rao, founder of the mandali, who popularised the Rama Navami concerts at the Fort High School. The award is aimed at promoting classical music by honouring eminent musicians.

The managing trustees of the trust, Krishna Prasad and Rama Prasad, told presspersons here on Tuesday that the award would be presented to Mr. Murthy on May 17 at the Fort High School.

The award comprises prize money of Rs. 50,000, a citation, and a memento. The first award was given to M.S.Subbulakshmi in 2001 and the award for 2002 went to M.Balamurali Krishna. A panel of experts, headed by S.N.Chandrashekar, selected Mr. Murthy.

Born on May 27, 1914, Rudrapatnam Ramaswamaiah Keshava Murthy learnt music at the age of six from his father and began giving concerts at the age of seven. In 1923, he went to Mysore to train under the legends, Chikka Rama Rao, and Bidaram Krishnappa. A contemporary of Mysore T.Chowdiah, Keshava Murthy shifted to Bangalore in 1934 to pursue higher studies.

He has accompanied several legends, including Palladam Sanjeeva Rao, Musiri Subrahmanya Iyer, Arayakudi Ramanuja Iyengar, Chambai Vaidhyanatha Bhagavathar, the Allathur brothers, G.N.Balasubrahmanyam, Tiger Varadachar, Mysore Vasudevachar, and Bidaram Krishnappa.

He has written several books on music, including Bala Shiksha, Vaggeyakara Krithigalu, Lakshya Lakshana Paddathi, Raga Lakshama and Raga Kosha, Sangeetha Lakshya Vignana, Hindustani Raga Kosha, Bharatheeya Vaggeyakararu, Bahatthara Ragamalika, Kshetrayya Padagalu, and Kacheri Paddhathi. Mr. Murthy is doing research on ragas and how rasas emanated in modes.
