Car of PM's kin towed away

By Devesh K. Pandey

NEW DELHI APRIL 1. An Opel Astra belonging to a close relative of the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, was towed away from the "No-Parking'' zone at Connaught Place in New Delhi by the traffic police yesterday.

The incident took place in the afternoon near the Lall Pathological Lab in Connaught Place when a traffic police crane towed away an Opel Astra of registration No. DL 2C J 4546, parked on the roadside. The car belongs to Mr. Vajpayee's close relative.

According to the traffic police, the car was towed away as it was parked in such a way that it obstructed traffic flow.

It is learnt that there was no one in the car except the driver, who apparently contacted the Prime Minister's residence soon after he came to know that the vehicle had been lifted. The driver had reportedly gone to collect a medical report from Lall Lab.

As the officials at the Prime Minister's residence came to know that the car had been impounded, they sprung into action to get the car released.

Senior traffic police officials, who refused to be quoted on such a "sensitive'' matter, said such incidents had occurred in the past as well when vehicles of various Ministers were towed away and challaned for traffic rule violations. "It would become difficult for us to execute our duties properly, if we go by the name and fame of the person,'' said a senior traffic police officer.
