Letters to the Editor
Sir, A senior citizen residing in Bangalore deposited Rs. 2,00,000 under the monthly income scheme in a post office. The deposit matured on July 7, 1998 and the value paid fell short by Rs. 855.50 towards interest for 11 days from July 7, 1998 as the postal staff had struck work. The depositor appealed and sent 31 reminders to the authorities, who were not able to decide who was at fault and on whom the responsibility be fixed. The depositor authorised me to follow up the case, as he is old and sick. I met the Director-General (SB) Postal, and submitted a representation on July 24, 2002. As there was no reply from the Director-General either, he sent a letter to the Finance Minister, Jaswant Singh, on February 18, 2003. To our surprise, the authorities have issued a sanction memo for payment of the short-paid interest to the depositor. Thanks to the intervention of the Minister, a miracle has happened.
