A bad precedent

Sir, — This has reference to ` Vaiko's speech an act of terrorism: Centre ' (March 30). Sworn affidavits filed in courts are deemed solemn and it is common knowledge that they can be used as evidence. To think of altering them later is unethical and, normally, unimaginable. The way the matter has been handled by the Centre baffles every citizen.

Even while dealing with the highest court, the matter has been handled in the shabbiest possible manner by the highest executive authorities. They had access to the best of legal opinion and all the time for drafting a proper affidavit. Is it that when politics comes to the fore, ethics makes its exit? None will dispute the fact that this will prove a very bad precedent.
