CM's stress on water conservation

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI MARCH 22 . Conservation and efficient management of water is the only solution to the water woes of the Capital, the Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, said here today.

Speaking at a function this morning after flagging off the "Save Water March'' organised by the India Water Works Association, Ms. Dikshit urged children and participants to conserve water as it was increasingly becoming a scarce commodity. She appealed to the people to contribute towards successful observation of this year as the Water Conservation Year.

Ms. Dikshit informed that the Delhi Government had recently launched the Paani Panchayat Project, which involved efficient water management in the rural areas of the Capital by involving women in the process of water distribution and management. She also gave the details of the other schemes launched in the recent past like water harvesting, renovation of wells and johars by her Government.

Later, a large number of enthusiastic children and people from all walks of life with the banners of "Save Water'' took part in the march which started from Bhairon Marg in front of the Pragatii Maidan and concluded near India Gate. They pledged their sincerity to water conservation.

Among others present at the function were the Delhi Jal Board Chief Executive Officer, P.K. Tripathi, and the Chief Engineer, G.C. Nandwani, who is also the president of the Indian Water Works Association.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Nandwani emphasised the need to conserve water in a metropolis city like Delhi. "It is both the role of water utilities and the people. There is urgent need to launch a movement to conserve water. Water conservation can solve a lot of problem and it could be provided to a large number of people. Unconsciously we waste a lot of water daily. Even small steps like closing the tap while shaving or washing the car with water in bucket can help solving lot of problem,'' he said.

Delhi, which requires about 800 MGD (million gallons per day) of water daily, is facing a shortage of about 150 MGD. This can be solved if there is awareness among the people about the need to conserve water. "Just like recent success in campaign against fire-crackers, there is urgent need to involve the children in our effort to conserve water in the Capital. This has to be made a movement,'' he said.
