Punjab not to impose VAT immediately

By Our Staff Correspondent

CHANDIGARH MARCH 22. The Punjab Chief Minister, Amarinder Singh, today announced that the State Government would not impose the proposed new VAT regime from April this year. It would be implemented "only after dispelling public apprehensions and making necessary preparations''.

The Chief Minister addressing presspersons said the State Finance Department was working out various modalities and the new taxation regime could not be put in position for some time yet.

The announcement comes against the backdrop of plans of various business organisations, especially in the small and tiny sectors, to launch an agitation to oppose VAT.

Initially the State Government had reiterated its commitment to implement VAT from April 1.

Without committing himself to a time-frame for introduction implementation of the new taxation regime, the Chief Minister said that before implementing the VAT structure of tax collection, the Government would dispel all apprehensions.

It would mobilise public opinion through seminars and meetings with various sections of industry before deciding in favour of VAT.
