The REC is among the 14 engineering colleges which were upragraded in September last. With this, the institute will directly be funded by the Central Government and main focus would be on improvement of quality of technical education. Speaking to The Hindu, the incharge director, V. Vasudeva Rao, said the new status would help strengthen research and consultancy activity. "The institute is offering 23 post graduate programmes. They will be strengthened by adding more infrastructure and laboratory facilities,'' he said. The NIT has been offering consultancy services in various fields, particularly Civil Engineering to both private and government organisations. Among the agencies that are being benefited from the NIT include Public Works Department, SCCL, NTPC, Warangal municipal corporation, HUDA, ONGC, L&T among others. In the new setup, the institute will have full autonomy and would be guided by industrialists and technologists. The Board of Governors will comprise experts from government and private agencies. "The institute can change the syllabi as and when required to suit the requirements of the industry and offer more relevant education,'' Prof Vasudeva Rao said. The NIT has the state-of-art library, with one crore collection and several thousands of journals. The library is fully digitised with all facilities on par with the IITs in the country. "Earlier, one is forced to spend one full year searching the relevant material for a Ph D programme. Now, it hardly takes one month,'' Prof Rao added.
