ANGRAU students conferred degrees

HYDERABAD March 11. Eight hundred and seventy six students were conferred their degrees by the Governor, Surjit Singh Barnala, at the 35th annual convocation of the Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University at a ceremony here on Tuesday. Mr. Barnala is also the Chancellor of the University.

Of these 592 were undergraduate students, 248 were Masters students and 36 were conferred their doctorates.

Five teachers, five research scientists and two extension scientists too were given awards for meritorious work.

Sompal, Member Agriculture, Planning Commission and Member, 12th Finance Commission, who was the Chief Guest delivered the convocation address.

In his report to the convocation, the Vice-Chancellor, I.V. Subba Rao, listed various achievements and landmarks of the university, its faculty and students. He described in detail the efforts to develop and upgrade the syllabus to match the latest developments in the world of science. During 2002-03, 913 students were admitted to undergraduate courses and 361 students were admitted to post-graduate courses.

The University has 67 research stations in agriculture, livestock and fisheries spread across seven agro-climatic zones of the State, Dr. Subba Rao reported. He announced that 34 improved varieties of food crops had been developed and released by university scientists in the past year.

The University supplied 2,412 quintal of breeder seeds and 5,482 quintals of foundation seeds of different crops during 2001-02.

Disclosing the financial health of the University, Dr. Subba Rao reported that the non-plan assistance for running the institution was Rs. 80.4 crores, out of which Rs. 67.18 crores was towards salaries. The ICAR provided Rs. 18.7 crores and the Government of India Rs. 2.69 crores. In 2002-03 Rs. 68.86 crores had been provided for salaries in a block grant of Rs. 84.95 crores.
