Poll for 368 local bodies' posts in April

By Our Staff Reporter

THENI MARCH 11. The State Election Commissioner for Panchayat Elections, M. Palanichamy, today announced that election for 368 vacant seats in panchayats, town panchayats, panchayat unions and municipalities would be held in April.

Talking to mediapersons at the Collectorate here today, Mr. Palanichamy said the exact dates of poll would be announced later. At present, 1.31 lakh posts were vacant in local bodies. A consultative meeting would be held in Madurai tomorrow in connection with Pappapatti and Keeripatti panchayat polls.

Detailing the number of vacant posts in panchayats in Theni district, he said there was one panchayat president post vacant in Okkaraipatti in the Andipatti union, one village panchayat ward member post each in Bodidasanpatti, Erumalainaickenpatti and Pottipuram, and two seats in Kuchanur.

The State Election Commission had disqualified 1,465 candidates from contesting in any election for the next three years. About 74,631 candidates contested in the 2001 local bodies elections, of which 59,959 submitted poll expenditure accounts to the State Election Commission. But 14,672 persons did not do so. Already, notices seeking clarification within 20 days were issued to defaulters. About 1,465 candidates did not submit their expenditure accounts even after the expiry of the deadline.

While Ariyalur recorded the highest number of defaulters, Karur registered the lowest number.

There were 68 defaulters in Madurai, 213 in Pudukottai, 49 in Karur, 91 in Tirunelveli, 212 in Thanjavur, 488 in Ariyalur and 344 in Perambalur. These defaulters would not contest in any election for the next three years.

Earlier, Mr. Palanichamy toured Virudhunagar, Thiruvarur, Thiruvallur, Villuparuam, Tiruchi, Thiruvannamalai, Kanyakumari and Kanchipuram to collect details on linking MP and MLA constituencies at district borders within that district. However, he was silent on linking of Kodaikanal with Theni district.
