The dead included three labourers hailing from Tamil Nadu, Palan from Usilampatti, Theni district, Kuppuswami (37) from Kaliamman Koil, Theni, and Pichu Pillai (25) from Nadutheru, Mamannur, Villupuram. While the relatives claimed the bodies of the first two after postmortem, that of Pillai is kept at the general hospital mortuary here. The other dead were Vijayan from Pulluvazhi, near Perumbavur, and Mohammed (40) from Kayattinkkara, near Aluva. Police said the labourers were asleep when a pickup van that crashed into the road median near the Market Road Junction on the National Highway at Aluva around 3 a.m. ran over them. Two other Tamil labourers who were injured are undergoing treatment at the Medical Trust Hospital here. One person is yet to be identified while the other is said to be Manivannan from Salem. The Ernakulam Collector, Gyanesh Kumar, provided Rs.10,000 to the victims' relatives and made arrangements for the bodies to be taken to the native place.
