This Day That Age
Anandam said, in a letter to the Editor: "From time immemorial in our country, hand-pounding of rice is second in importance only to hand-loom weaving. Many a destitute woman has been saved from poverty and misery by this industry, which plays a prominent role in village economy." "More is gained in nutritive content by hand-pounding rice, and waste material is less. Above all, there is the human aspect, as this cottage industry keeps a large number of people usefully employed. Will it be too much to expect Government to save the hand-pounding industry from becoming extinct?"
