This Day That Age
From the Editorials: "The passing of Stalin may not make any immediate difference to the relations between Russia and China, but it may have the long term effect of giving Mao Tse-tung a new importance in the Soviet Bloc." "The triumph of the Chinese Communists was not anticipated in the Kremlin and the tactics that Mao Tse-tung used were unorthodox by Marxist standards, being based upon the support of the peasantry rather than the urban proletariat." "Mao built upon his practice a superstructure of theory explained in his books, which have to be studied by all Chinese Communists. His works have been published in Russia but it is recognised that there are important differences between Chinese and Western Communism." "The tendency in Moscow is to regard Mao as the man who successfully adapted Marxism to conditions in Asia, and his advice is likely to be sought on Asiatic affairs." "The fact that he has brought the 450 million people of China into the Soviet Bloc gives him greater weight in Communist Councils than the Soviet satellites in East Europe, and his position is rendered unique by the fact that he rose to power with little direct assistance or encouragement from Moscow." "Mao, however, is dependent upon Russia for economic aid, heavy equipment and technical assistance. The unfortunate events that led to Chinese intervention in Korea have closed the doors of America and her allies to China, and the virtual blockade proposed by Washington will isolate China more from the free world and bind her more closely to Russia."
