The name of the 69-year-old Mr. Singh was proposed by the PCC president, Vidya Stokes, who was considered a stronger contender for the post, and seconded by Gangu Ram and Rangila Ram Rao. Mr. Singh is likely to be sworn in on Thursday. He said he would leave for New Delhi tomorrow for consultations with the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, on composition of his Ministry. He said he would have a small Ministry to begin with but would be gradually expanded. Meanwhile, a clash between supporters of the rival contenders for chief ministership was averted at the intervention of the police here today. PTI
