Mayawati denies SP allegations

Lucknow March 3 . The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mayawati today strongly denied the opposition Samajwadi Party's allegation that she had asked her party MLAs and MPs to siphon off money meant for development of their constituencies.

``I strongly deny all these allegations and in contrast to what is being said, I have always asked my partymen to spend money for the development of their constituencies,'' Ms. Mayawati said in a statement released here.

She said the videotape showing her demanding money from the BSP legislators was a ``conspiracy to defame my government.''

The issue began in the evening when the SP handed over a video cassette and compact disc to Governor, Vishnu Kant Shastri, allegedly showing the Chief Minister demanding funds from her party MPs and MLAs. The tapes were later telecast on several news channels.

Meanwhile the Allahabad High Court today adjourned the hearing till March 6 on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking direction to Ms. Mayawati to disclose the gifts received on her birthday celebrations and depositing the same in the State Exchequer. The order adjourning the proceedings on the writ petition was passed by a Division Bench, comprising Chief Justice, Tarun Chatterjee and Justice R.K. Agarwal.

The Socialists Front, People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), and National Alliance for People's Movement, had filed a writ petition on February 28 seeking direction to the Chief Minister for disclosure of gifts and cash received by her on her birthday celebrations and deposit the same in the State Treasury. — UNI,PTI
