`Kerala stayed away from BC panel meet'

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM March. 3. The CPI deputy legislature party leader, Benoy Viswam, has demanded to know why Kerala had stayed away from the conference convened by the National Backward Classes Commission to discuss the reservation issue.

In a statement here today, Mr. Viswam said the meeting had been convened on February 18 and 19 to review how implementation of the Mandal Commission recommendations had benefited backward communities.

The Mandal Commission itself had recommended such a review 10 years after implementation of its report.

The CPI leader alleged that the State Government had run away from the meeting because it was not sincere about the reservation issue.

He also demanded to know what the Muslim League had to say about the State's failure to participate in the Delhi meeting.
