Krishnan Sasikiran, winner of the Asian individual men's championship at Doha on Sunday.

KOZHIKODE MARCH 3. Krishnan Sasikiran did no harm to his rapidly raising reputation as a high class player when he won the fourth Asian individual men's championship in Doha on Sunday night. The Chennai-based Grandmaster won the title outright, beating former World junior champion Darmen Sadvakasov of Kazakhstan in the ninth and final round.

The 22-year-old, who won $12,000 as prize-money, finished with seven points, remaining unbeaten throughout. Ehsan Ghaem Maghami of Iran took the runner-up spot with 6.5, while Mohammad Al-Modiahki of host Qatar was third with six.

Sasikiran also became one of the three Indian players to qualify for the World championship cycle, Neelotpal Das and Dibyendu Barua being the others. Sasikiran, shortly after arriving here from Doha, told The Hindu on Monday that his primary aim was to qualify for the World championship. "I felt happy to win the championship, though I did not play particularly well,'' he said.
