Punjab's Rajwinder Kaur Gill winning the 200m gold in the All-India Police athletic meet in Chennai on Monday.
The current record-holder, Bahadur, according to a team official had sustained a knee injury before he arrived here and that forced to keep away. His absence had paved the way for Navpreet Singh, who had represented the country in the Asian Track and Field championship in Sri Lanka last year. Expectedly the Punjab lad won with an effort of 18.48 mts where Bahadur's mark in this meet was 19.33 mts set in 2000. But then came the hitch. Navpreet had violated a service condition. He in not even a year yet in the police force, the minimum requirement for eligibility, after quitting Tatas in September 2002. BSF protested and the Technical committee, armed with proof will disqualify him on Tuesday. The beneficiary will be Kulwinder Singh also of Punjab and Jagdip Singh (BSF) who will pick the bronze. Another athlete disqualified likewise was national record-holder Hardeep Kaur in hammer throw. She was with LIC till February this year and had represented Punjab Police within a month of joining it. Hardeep had won the silver in the event. Rajwinder Kaur Gill of Punjab, the best overall athlete award winner last time, set a new meet record in the 200m after a near photo finish with CRPF's Jincy Phillip on whose name the earlier record had stood. The only other meet record in the day came in the womens 400 m hurdles where Asika Beevi of CRPF improved her own mark by a second to 57.10 seconds. The results: Men: 200m: 1.
