Tension gripped Modi Road, Shampura, and Tannery Road today as shops and business establishments remained closed. Towards afternoon, small groups threw stones at one another on Modi Road in Doddanna Nagar in Devara Jeevanahalli Police Station limits. Police lathicharged and burst teargas shells to disperse the miscreants. A senior police officer fired in the air. The incidents, which occurred between 2.30 p.m. and 3.15 p.m., caused panic in the area and shops and business establishments were closed. Several people, including some policemen, received minor injuries in stone throwing. Police had a hard time chasing the miscreants in the winding lanes and by-lanes off Modi Road. The area was cordoned off and more than 44 persons were taken into custody. Earlier, more than 100 people were taken into preventive custody in connection with violence on Saturday night and Sunday morning. Some of the arrested were interrogated. While the curfew was relaxed in the morning, prohibitory orders will be in force. So far, 25 persons have been injured in the clashes. While 24 of them were treated and discharged, one is still in NIMHANS. Violence broke out in the area on Saturday night when a group took out a "victory procession" after India won the match against Pakistan in the cricket world cup in South Africa. On Sunday morning, a mob blocked traffic at Periyar Circle in K.G.Halli. When the crowd refused to disperse, police resorted to lathicharge and fired 50 rounds of teargas shells. The police said there were no untoward incidents in Aland in Gulbarga District and Chikodi in Belgaum District today and the situation was under control. The police said ban orders would continue till Tuesday. Earlier, C. K. Jaffer Sharief, Bangalore North MP, C. K. Ibrahim, Janata Dal (Secular) leader and former Union minister, and Marimutthu, councillor, visited the violence-hit areas.
