Jammu & Kashmir
By Shujaat Bukhari
Reacting to speeches made by the NC leaders, Abdur Rahim Rather and Ali Mohammad Sagar, on the Governor's address, the Deputy Chief Minister, Mangat Ram Sharma, said the party, which once boasted of being secular was now "in the lap of the BJP". "Your policies are divisive and you are creating a wedge between the communities," he charged. Taking exception to Mr. Sagar's remarks that the Congress would betray the PDP-led Government, he said, "When we support you, we are good people and if we support someone else we are not." Earlier, Mr. Sagar asked the Government to clarify its stand, vis-à-vis, militancy in Kashmir. "You do not condemn terrorism and have adopted a policy of appeasement towards the militants and the Hurriyat," he said. He said NC was not averse to dialogue but there should be concrete measures. "I want to tell this House that both India and Pakistan are not sincere in resolving the issue," Mr. Sagar said and added that in the end, the stand of the NC chief Farooq Abdullah that the Line of Control should be converted into an International Border would be vindicated.
