Violence will be put down: Kharge

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE March 3. The Home Minister, Mallikarjun Kharge, told the Legislative Assembly today that stringent action would be taken to curb violence in any part of the State.

Replying to a question raised during Zero Hour on incidents of violence following India's victory over Pakistan in the World Cup cricket match on Saturday last, Mr. Kharge said the police had taken timely action to curb the violence from spreading in Bangalore and also at Aland in Gulbarga District.

He said that in Bangalore, the violence was mainly in parts of Devarajeevanahalli and it was sparked off following a victory procession by cricket enthusiasts. But the police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

Mr. Kharge said prohibitory orders under Section 144 had been promulgated in the violence-affected areas for three days and added that 87 persons were taken into custody.

He assured the House that steps would be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
