Govt. draws flak for grant-in-aid GO

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore March 3. Bowing to pressure from the Opposition and also from the Treasury benches in the Legislative Council, the Government today announced that it would keep in abeyance the Government Order on stopping grant-in-aid to 10 art and culture institutions, and also decided to take a re-look at the issue per se in the light of the report of the Subject Committee and the recommendations of the Karnataka Administrative Reforms Commission.

The Minister of State for Kannada and Culture, Rani Satish, was hard pressed to explain why the Government had taken such a decision in stopping grant-in-aid to institutions which were furthering the cause of Kannada.

Initiating a discussion, the Leader of the Opposition criticised the Government for issuing such an order which would uproot institutions of repute. Instead, the Government should increase aid to the Kannada and Culture Department so that it could help more organisations.

He said the Government had taken a "stupid decision" as it would affect institutions which have come to represent the pride of Karnataka. If there were irregularities in any institution, the Government should look into those and punish such institutions, instead of coming out with a blanket order.

V.R.Sudarshan (Congress) said the Government had to enunciate a policy on grant-in-aid to institutions. He mentioned that the subject committee had recommended stopping grants to certain institutions.

`Mukhyamantri' Chandru (BJP), member of the Subject Committee, concurred that the committee had gone through the matter and had suggested black-listing of such institutions which had misappropriated funds.
