Bid to loot bank foiled in Raichur

By Our Staff Correspondent

Raichur March 3. Timely action by police foiled an attempt by two thieves to loot a `gramin' bank here on Sunday.

Three police personnel were injured in the operations. They are the Police Sub-Inspector, Ramkishan, the constable, Buddeppa, and the driver of the police jeep of the West Police Station, Tulajaram. Eranna, one of the two culprits, was arrested while his accomplice, Chintya, escaped.

The injured were admitted to a private hospital here. Later, Mr. Ramkishan, who suffered a serious injury in his stomach, was rushed to a hospital in Hyderabad.

His condition is said to be stable.

Mr. Buddeppa, who suffered a stab wound in his arm, and Mr. Tuljaram were treated at the hospital.

According to police, Eranna and Chintya, who were armed with lethal weapons, entered the bank located beside the West Police station on Station Road on Sunday midnight after breaking the locks of the main door.

Following a wireless message from the police headquarters, Mr. Ramkishan and Mr. Budeppa, who were on night beat, rushed to the bank, where they found the locks of the main door broken.

They went into the bank premises when the thieves were trying to open the shutters of the `strong room'. The culprits stabbed Mr. Ramkishan in his stomach, and also attacked Mr. Budeppa and Mr. Tuljaram. However, the police personnel were able to arrest one of the culprits.

J. Arun Chakravarthi, Superintendent of Police, inspected the bank premises, and constituted a special team to search for the fugitive.

Chennabassappa, manager of the bank branch, told this correspondent that no damage had been done to the bank's property. The culprits could not open the locks of the strong room thanks to the arrival of police.
