Jindal rail mill goes on hot trial

By Our Staff Reporter

KOLKATA MARCH 3. The 7.5 lakh tonne rail-cum-structural mill of Jindal Steel and Power (JSPL) in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh, is all set to be commissioned before the scheduled date, March 31. Talking to The Hindu the company Vice-Chairman and CEO, V. Gujral, said the Rs. 396 crore project had already gone on hot trials without ore run.

The JSPL project would supply 120 metre (unwelded) rails reducing the number of welds from the present 160 to 17 per km. The Bhilai plant is now modernising its rail mill of identical capacity to produce 78 metre rails against the existing length of 13 to 26 metres.

Asked whether there would be any saving from the sanctioned project cost which was as such lower for such projects, Mr. Gujral responded affirmatively.

The company had pegged the project cost at a lower level arguably due to procurement of a closed facility from ISCOR of South Africa. Apart from rails the plant manufactures parallel flange beams and columns in medium and heavy sizes and sheet piles.
