This Day That Age
The capital of Pakistan witnessed the disastrous loss of a British-built De Havilland Comet jet airliner in wee hours of the 3rd. The plane, of Canadian Pacific Airlines, due to be christened "Empress of Hawaii," was going to Honolulu from London. As it roared down the runway to take off from Drigh Road airport at 3-30 a.m., the jet suddenly swerved, smashed through a fence, hit a culvert, and crashed into a ditch 50 feet deep. There it caught fire, charring to death its five Canadian crew members, and six passengers.
