Letters to the Editor
Sir, The Union budget tried to please the voters by giving minor concessions. But in the end, the results shall be otherwise. The concessions given will be overshadowed by the increase in the prices of petrol and diesel and the hike in service tax rate from five to eight per cent.
M. Kumar,
Sir, Though the budget proposals appear to benefit the average salaried and the lower-middle income groups, it is not so. Raising the standard deduction to 40 per cent, but limiting it to Rs. 30,000, is offset by the reduction in the PF interest rate. They can benefit only if the income tax exemption limit is increased to Rs. 75,000.
S. Krishnan,
