An eye-opener

Sir, — The Himachal Pradesh Assembly election results proved the BJP pundits wrong in gauging people's sentiments. The Modi magic and the Hindutva hype did not bring cheer to the party. What happened in Gujarat is an aberration and to extrapolate the results to other States is a Himalayan blunder. The results should be as an eye-opener to the BJP.

T.S. Padmanabhan,
Chennai

Sir, — Personality-based politics is the cause for internal bickerings in political parties. Both the BJP and the Congress are facing the problem of rebel candidates with indirect support from their godfathers enjoying clout at higher echelons. Except in Tripura, all three States where Assembly elections took place, the same factor worked well. But internal bickerings could not be the only factor for defeat of the ruling parties. Once known as a party with difference, the BJP too is now known as the party with differences. The exemplary behaviour of the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister should not become an exceptional case.

V.A. Gopala,
Bangalore
